The students and I have brainstormed a list of ways to practice their weekly spelling words. They came up with: rainbow words, writing words out, having a parent ask them, using Scrabble tiles, using a whiteboard, etc.
There are also many websites that help students practice their words. Spellingcity is a website we have used in the classroom and it is an excellent tool for helping your child prepare for their weekly spelling tests. I have included the link below. I am in the process of registering on the site. Once I have a username and password, I will share them via your child's agenda. In the meanwhile, students can use the site and just type in their own words. The site allows you to be "tested" on your words, practice your words, and play a variety of word games that reinforce spelling and comprehension. I was particularly pleased to see a feature in the "Teach Me" section that reads the word out to the student and uses it in a sentence. This is very useful for homophones (words that sound the same, but have different spellings and different meanings). For example, deer/dear, to/two/too, principle/principal, etc.
If you come across other great spelling sites, please pass them on to me either by email or through your child's agenda. We always appreciate new high quality electronic resources.
